What are Gundam gashapon?

Short answer

Gundam gashapon are capsule toys Bandai sells under its official Gashapon brand. Each machine holds one line, such as Mobile Suit Ensemble, Mechanical Bust or Capsule Index. Among the lines checked here, Bandai's Japanese site prices a capsule from ¥300 to ¥1,500. "Gachapon" is the same thing spelled differently.

Bandai's US site writes the name as "Gashapon" and carries a notice that GASHAPON is a Bandai trademark. That is why official listings use that spelling, while collectors and search engines often write "gachapon". If you want a refresher on how the machines work, start with what gashapon is.

Gundam has been in capsules for a long time. According to Wikipedia's SD Gundam entry, Bandai launched the Gashapon Senshi series (SD Gundam World) in 1985, and fans nicknamed the line Gankeshi. Today's range is wider: busts, assembly kits, deformed collectibles, mascots and charms all sit under the same brand.

The main Gundam gashapon lines

Bandai's US site lists dozens of Gundam items, and Bandai's Japanese Gashapon site gives the price and number of designs for each volume. These are the lines worth knowing. Prices and design counts belong to the specific volume named and change between volumes.

Line What it is Price (Japan) Designs
Mobile Suit Ensemble (vol. 31) Numbered figure series; vol. 31 centers on the Wing Gundam Zero ¥500 5
MS Mechanical Bust DX (Unicorn Gundam Unit 2 Banshee) Mobile suit bust with an outer shell and inner mechanics ¥800 3
Exceed Model Trinity RX-78-2 Gundam Three capsules combine into a bust about 20 cm tall ¥1,500 3
Capsule Index 04 Non-posable deformed collection figures ¥400 4
Gashapon Warriors Zero 02 Revival of the SD Gundam capsule line ¥300 15
Capsuleverse Mobile Suit Gundam 01 Figure in front of a relief-style background ¥800 4
Let's Get in Line (Narikiri Haro) Original Mobile Suit x Haro designs ¥300 5

The Japanese site also lists Let's Get in Line: Zaku 2 at ¥400 and Mobile Suit Ensemble 23.5 at ¥500.

Bandai's US listing also includes the Still Waiting For You series (Normal Suit and L-size versions) and Hatsune Miku color variants of Mobile Suit Ensemble and Capsule Action. On the Japanese site, the Gundam GQuuuuuuX edition of Still Waiting For You (Machiboke in Japanese) is ¥400. Not everything is a figure: the same listings include personal marker charms, rubber mascots, a swing mascot, acrylic stands and a sip mat.

How the lines differ

Bandai's listings do not give a scale for these lines, so compare them by price, format and how much building they need. They do show the format, and that is enough to choose.

Mobile Suit Ensemble is the one to collect if you want a run of suits. Volumes are numbered, with half-number volumes such as 15.5 and 23.5 in between, and Bandai's page for volume 31 describes a lineup built around the Wing Gundam Zero. There is also an overseas release, Mobile Suit Ensemble SP 2nd, tagged "Overseas GBO exclusive" on the US site. The page does not say what GBO stands for.

MS Mechanical Bust is for shelf presence. Bandai calls it a bust model for enjoying the dense detail of a mobile suit, and the DX version lets you combine the outer armor with the inner mechanics. The DX line opened with the Unicorn Gundam. The second release, Unicorn Gundam Unit 2 Banshee, is pitched as one to display next to the first.

Exceed Model is the most expensive and the most involved. In the Trinity set you need all three capsules (Exterior, Internal Structure and Core Fighter Cockpit) to complete an RX-78-2 Gundam bust about 20 cm tall. Bandai says it arrives just before the tenth year since Exceed Model Zaku Head.

Capsule Index goes the other way. Bandai describes it as an illustrated book inside a capsule: deformed collection figures that do not move, with realistic sculpting and dynamic poses. Gashapon Warriors Zero is the SD Gundam throwback. Bandai says it keeps the original's roughly two-head-tall silhouette with a more refined design, and at ¥300 with 15 designs in volume 02 it is the cheapest per capsule of the lines above.

With Exceed Model, one capsule gets you a third of a bust, so a missing piece hurts more there than in a line of standalone figures.

How to buy Gundam gashapon outside Japan

Bandai's US Gashapon site has a location directory covering the United States and Ontario in Canada. Official Bandai shops are marked with a star and appear for California, Washington, Texas, New York, Florida and Ontario. Other states are listed without an official shop. Each product page sends you to "Gashapon Machine" and that directory under "Where to buy".

Every listing also warns that an item may be sold out because of the time difference with Japan. A line you see on the site may not be in your local machine yet, and an older volume may be gone. If you cannot find it locally, you end up on a resale marketplace or a proxy service. Our guide to buying gashapon outside Japan covers the proxy route and shipping, and finding gashapon near you covers machines.

Use the yen prices above as an anchor. If a seller asks far more than the official capsule price for a common volume, ask whether you are paying for rarity or just for the wait.

How to avoid fake Gundam gashapon

Bandai's product pages show a display sheet and numbered photos for each volume. Compare a listing's photos against them: the figures in the set, their colors and the packaging should match the official designs for that volume. Check the volume number too, since the numbered lines run across many releases.

Buy from sellers who show the actual item rather than stock photos, and be wary of sealed listings priced well under the going rate. Our guide to spotting fake gashapon goes through the checks in detail.

How to display Gundam gashapon

Busts such as Mechanical Bust and Exceed Model work well alone on a shelf, because the exterior and internal parts can be arranged to show the layers. Ensemble figures and the deformed Capsule Index figures look better in a row. For stands, lighting and shelf layouts, see these gashapon display ideas.
