What Are Blind Boxes?
Blind boxes are collectible figures sold in sealed packaging, where the buyer doesn't know which specific character or variant they'll receive until they open the box. Unlike gashapon (which use vending machines), blind boxes are purchased retail — from specialty stores, Pop Mart flagship locations, or online.
The modern blind box wave was largely pioneered by Pop Mart (泡泡玛特), a Beijing-based company founded in 2010. Their combination of designer-IP collaborations, art toy aesthetics, and the excitement of blind selection created a global sensation. As of 2024, Pop Mart has over 400 stores worldwide and generates $1B+ in annual revenue.
The key difference is the purchase mechanism. Gashapon use coin-operated machines with small capsules (typically ¥100–500, $1–5). Blind boxes are sold at retail ($8–30+) in card-backed boxes and tend to be larger, more elaborate figures. Both share the excitement of randomised reveals.
The Rarity System
Most blind box series include 6–12 standard figures plus at least one hidden "secret" figure with a dramatically lower pull rate. Pop Mart's typical structure:
- Standard figures (1/12 per case) — sold in 12-piece cases, one of each standard design
- Secret figure (1/144 or 1/72) — the chase piece; often worth 5–20x retail on secondary market
- Single pack — $8–$15 each, fully blind
- Case pack (12 pcs) — $95–$180, guarantees one of each standard, no secret guarantee
